Viewing Search Results

When the search results list appears, a heading shows the total number of records found that satisfy the search terms, and your current viewing position in the list. To navigate the results list, click the <<Previous 10 Titles and Next 10 Titles>> links at the top or bottom of the page.

Note:
If your search finds only one title, you immediately see detailed information about the title (see "Viewing Detailed Title Information").

The search results list includes brief publication information for each title. You can select options in the search results list to see availability information, request or purchase a title, see additional information about a title, or save the title to a title list.

Note:
If you specified a Web search engine such as GoogleTM as a search database, the search results list may consist of links to Web sites that include the search terms. When you click a link, the site opens in a separate browser window. Close the window to return to the results list. For more information about searching remote databases, see "Selecting Search Databases".

The search results list may include information under each title that shows where your search term occurs in the record for the title. This information can help you decide whether the title interests you.

You can select the option links in each title section to launch further actions:

Viewing Detailed Title Information

From the search results list you can view detailed availability and bibliographic information about any title. Simply click the title itself to display the detailed view. You can navigate from title to title in this view by clicking <<Previous Title and Next Title>> links, or click Go back to: Search Results at the bottom of the display to return to the search results list.

Note:
In this view, the library may display a call number for the title drawn from the bibliographic record. This call number does not necessarily correspond to the classification method of a particular branch. (Local call numbers for specific items may be offered in the availability views. See "Viewing Availability Information for a Title".)

Viewing Availability Information for a Title

Click Availability for a title in the search results list to view local or system availability information. Local library availability and library system availability entries show which organizations hold the title, whether copies of the title are available for check-out, and other information about each specific holding. The local library is defined by the organization named in the Currently logged into box in the banner area of the page.

The Local Availability view is the default. Click System Availability to change the view; click Local Availability to return to the Local Availability view. Since there may be several copies of a title in the library or the library system, there may be more than one entry in the Local Availability or System Availability views. Each entry is a separate item. The entries are organized first by location, then by collection at each location.

Note:
The library may use one Availability tab instead of Local Availability and System Availability.

The list may be quite long for periodicals such as magazines. You may need to scroll the page to see all the entries. You can click the plus sign (+) to expand the listings for a location or collection, or click the minus sign (-) to hide them.

Note:
You may be able to request that the library hold a specific copy of the title for you. Click to request a specific copy. (See "Request a specific copy of a title" for more information.)

Certain items listed in the availability views may include notes, in which the library offers additional information about items. These items are marked by the notes icon . To view the notes, click the notes icon to open the note window. Click OK or X to close the note window.

An item on reserve for a course is marked by the course reserve icon . You can click the icon to launch a search for the course record.

The availability views may display call numbers. These call numbers reflect the branch classification schemes, and help to identify the shelf location of each specific copy in the availability list. If you are viewing a periodical such as a magazine, a designation column displays the volume number, issue, and date of each entry.

Note:
From the Availability view, you can click the Detailed Information tab to display the detailed bibliographic information for the title.

Launching a Related Search from the Results List

When search results are displayed, the left pane displays links to launch related searches:

You may also find links in the detailed bibliographic information for the title. For example, you may be able to click the author's name to launch a browse search of the author index, beginning with the name you selected. (These links are also displayed in the left pane, in the Related Searches list.)
